We have been given time to reflect on what is important and for some this has meant letting go of materialistic values and appreciating the good and simple things in life.
Homemade edible gifts can help you with all the above. Take the time, bake something with love and have handmade gifts to give your neighbours, friends, and family.
How to get started making homemade edible gifts
Why not give it a go? Some simple packaging can really help you here. Recycle packaging from gifts you receive. Start collecting gift bags, ribbons, gift tags, your favourite colour pen…that’s a great start, presentation is sorted.
Keep pretty jars from the kitchen.
To sterilise a jar: Wash your jars and the lids in hot soapy water, but do not dry them. Instead, leave them to stand upside down on a roasting tray while they’re still wet.
Pop the tray of clean, wet jars and lids into a preheated oven at 160-180ºC for about 15 mins.
They are now ready to be filled with your baked goodies!
Simple 3 ingredient shortbread
So what can I bake? Keep it simple…. bake some shortbread, 3 ingredients, how simple is that!
Preheat your oven to 180°C. Put a piece of baking paper on a baking tray.
Have 225 gms butter, softened in a bowl
Add 110 gms caster sugar, beat these together until lovely and creamy
Add 275 gms plain flour, mix until it looks crumbly. Get your hands in and bring it together, squeezing a little, into one ball of dough. Its like making a snowball!
Using your hands, roll the dough into walnut-sized balls and place them slightly apart on the tray. Flatten them slightly with the back of a damp fork and bake in the oven for 13–15 minutes or until they are light golden brown and slightly firm on top.
Take them out of the oven and slide the paper off the tray onto your counter. After a minute, transfer them to a cooling tray (this is so the underneath doesn’t stay soft)
Feeling adventurous after conquering shortbread? Jazz it up! Grate some lemon zest into the mix before you add the flour, BOOM, amazing lemon shortbread!
Even more creative? When they are cooled dip half of them into melted chocolate, place on the paper again and leave to set. You can also put them in the fridge.
Put 5/6 cookies stacked up in a gift bag, tie with a ribbon, write a gift tag and you’re done!
